With the many challenges that came with 2020, we should all take pride in what we have been able to achieve this year. One of the many things that the pandemic and ongoing global crisis has highlighted to the world is how important farming and farmers are to everyone’s day-to-day life.
2020 was a productive year for fieldmargin
We launched a number of features this year to help make farm management, communication and record keeping easier. As it comes to a close it’s a good time to take a look back at our 2020 releases:
A new look for the to-do list 👀
Keeping track of jobs and notes with fieldmargin’s to-do list gives your team better visibility of what work has been completed and what needs to be done. This year we updated the design of the app’s main screen so that it is easier to quickly access your to-do list which shows the work you need to do ordered by due date.
GPS directions to the field ↗️
Anyone who has to travel around the country to work on farms will understand what a challenge navigation can be. Very few fields have a specific post-code or street number! So this year we’ve added the option to get directions to the field on fieldmargin you are travelling too.
Field Job completion by field ✅
We improved Field Jobs so that each field on the job can be ticked off as you complete them. This makes it easier to track progress on Field Jobs that have to be done in multiple fields. Completion date and time along with who marked it as complete it is saved per field so all your information will be correct for farm assurance inspections, even if the job was done over several days.
Herd management 🐏🐄
This year we were thrilled to share with you the first iteration of our new tools for livestock management. This allows you to keep track of the number of animals on your farm and their location.
We store where your herds have grazed and when so it’s easy to see how long it was since a herd was last moved or how long your empty fields have had to rest. As you move herds around your farm you will build up their history. You can also look at your field history to see when a field was last grazed and how many ‘rest days’ it has had to recover.
Yield recording 👩🌾
We added yield recording so that as well as knowing what inputs you used you can measure the resulting yields. Simply add the yield per field and we calculate your yield per ha/ac, total yield for the field and total yield for the farm. You can do this on your phone so you ensure accuracy by recording and sharing them with your team as they happen, right in the field. Read more here.
Yield recording is flexible so that it works for lots of different types of produce. From tonnes of wheat, to kilograms of apples, or the number of hay bales it’s quick and easy to set up the outputs that are relevant for your farm.
Improvements to field history: A timeline of what was done when 📲
Field history lets you easily keep track of work and inputs in each field. Every time you create a Field Job or move a herd, your reports and history will be updated to help you monitor your operation. This means that when you need to look up a job it’s quick and easy to find. This year we made this better by including your livestock grazing and showing inputs used on each job so it’s easier to spot the one you want. Changes sync across all devices so you and your team can record and share information directly so you do not need to combine it all at the end of the day. Read more here.
Farm reporting made easy: Instantly produce powerful reports by field and for your whole farm 📊
On fieldmargin you can produce a whole farm input summary for your farm on our web app. Reports calculate your total inputs so you do not need to use a calculator or multiple spreadsheets.
In 2020 we introduced the ability to export these reports to a spreadsheet for your records or analysis. This was the most requested feature in our 2019 survey. You can even get a full export of all Field Jobs for the year which you can use when working out your gross margins. Read more here.
This is a premium feature only available with a paid subscription (read more about our subscriptions here).
We’re proud of our progress, but there’s lots more to do 🙌
We are still focused on our goal of building a hub forall your farm information that is easy to use and can be accessed anywhere.
We are currently working on a Sub-fields feature. This will let you temporarily sub-divide fields into areas to have different crops, treatments or livestock groups. This will mean you can keep more accurate records. We are also working on developing more reporting features for herd management.
Have your say on what you would like to see in our end of year survey.
A huge thanks to each and every one of you 💫
Thank you so much for all of your support and feedback so far; fieldmargin works because you make it work with your input. We are excited to see what 2021 will bring!
