“I really like using fieldmargin – being able to keep everything about the farm together and separated by year is really important” Willie Liebenberg, Klipfontyn, SA

Willie Liebenberg works on a farm near Klipfontyn that grows Wheat, Barley and Canola.  The farm also has paddocks for sheep and they run pivots in the summer.  Willie has been farming for over 12 years and he has been using fieldmargin for almost two years for farm planning and annual records.

“I have used a lot of apps over the last few years, fieldmargin is the most user friendly for record keeping and sharing maps that we have ever tested.”

Willie has found that fieldmargin has definitely helped with communication a lot.

“We are three brothers that farm together. We live about 8 km away from each other. When we each do a job on the farm we login and update the app. This means that everyone is on the same page at the right moment. It is most important that everything is in the same place.”

fieldmargin automatically saves tasks and notes to a field history for each year. This makes storing records more organised than paper year books.

“The big problem I have faced is that after 4-5 years I go back to the office and all my year books are very busy, complicated or information may have been thrown away. And then – the record keeping is gone! The information is no longer available to me. That is why I really like using fieldmargin – being able to keep everything together and separated by year is really important.”

Willie also collects rainfall data using monitoring sites. This means that when the bank manager calls he can quickly scroll through his records and share key details.

“One of the things I like the most about it at the moment is Farm Years for rotation planning. This has helped me a lot for planning the crop next season. Each crop is colour coded and total areas are automatically calculated. This means that I don’t have to make up different maps and colour them in manually. It is a really useful feature and very simple to use.”
